Gatineau National Park in the Winter
Quebec's deep snows and hardwood-forested rolling hills make for classic cross-country skiing, and on winter weekends it seems like every path in the province becomes an impromptu ski trail. Gatineau Provincial Park, in western Quebec just north of the federal capital of Ottawa, is one of the top cross-country ski areas in eastern Canada for those who want a winter wilderness experience: Dedicated to skiers and snowshoers, the park is one of the North's few destinations free of the whine of snowmobiles. The park contains more than 200 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails winding through deep woodlands and past frozen lakes. The trails link a network of eight warming shelters that serve day skiers. For more of an adventure, these shelters — a mix of cabins, yurts, and a hostel - can be reserved for overnight stays: Pack a sleeping bag and a make a multiday circuit of the park, skiing from hut to hut. http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/canada/top_twenty3.htm

Gatineau National Park, just across the river in Quebec Province, is a delightful place to visit any time of the year, but in autumn the changing colors of its forests makes it one of the most beautiful places in the world. Gatineau Park (French: Parc de la Gatineau) is a park in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, just north of Ottawa, Ontario. Administered by the federal National Capital Commission, the park forms a 363 km² triangle west of the Gatineau River, whose circumference is 179.2 km. It includes parts of the City of Gatineau, and the municipalities of Chelsea, Pontiac and La PĂȘche. Although it was advocated by Dominion Parks Commissioner James Harkin as the first national park to be created outside the Rocky Mountains, it remains the only federal park that is not a national park...
